Geology
Aragonite, a calcium carbonate similar to marble, derives its name from the locale of early known deposits in Aragon (Spain). It is a polymorph of calcite, having the same chemistry as calcite, but a different crystal structure.
A relatively soft mineral (4.0 on the Moh's hardness scale), Aragonite can be cut with great precision and polished to a mirror finish. Its translucent property allows specimens to be lighted from within, producing unique and spectacular nighttime colors of red, orange, yellow, and white.
